Steak In A Sack

I first started hosting get togethers at Steak in a Sack on March 29, 2008 (photo above). Based upon the success of my web site, people were increasingly asking me to hold some sort of event/get together in the DC area. Many locations were chosen, and I decided to pick a place right in Marlow Heights, in homage to my web site and the place where many of us grew up. Steak in a Sack opened on April 4, 1962 in its current location, owned by Zach Khalid. It has seen many changes around its location but has remained very much the same (with the exception of the juke boxes no longer in the booths, and being open 24 hours a day).

Today Steak in a Sack is owned by Dennis Khalid, son of the original owner, Zach, and also employs his children at the restaurant, so there are three generations. Steak in a Sack is a real Marlow Heights institution and landmark, a place many of us have been to back in the 60s and 70s, the heyday of the area. I have hosted four get togethers a year since 2008, so that makes 30 we’ve held as of June 2015. These get togethers have also seen former teachers, vice-principals, and principals in attendance. You just don’t know who will show up, but they will probably be old friends and classmates you haven’t seen for 40 years–or more! Enjoy looking through the galleries of past get togethers, and I certainly encourage everyone to come out to a get together. You’ll be glad you did!
