Marlow Heights 60s and 70s

Silver Hill Elementary

Silver Hill Elementary was a PG County public school, opened in 1965, and closed sometime into the 80s. It is located in the Silver Hill area of Suitland. Some students went on to Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High, while others attended Suitland Jr. High. From a web site follower, Jeanne, here is her recollection of the school:

Silver Hill was a brand new school when I entered Second Grade in 1965. We lived on nearby Park Boulevard, and eagerly checked on its construction that entire summer. Mrs. Gentry was an excellent teacher, and my favorite as well. I always had the feeling that she was everyone’s favorite. We performed a class play once, and I was cast as a princess. Mrs. G remarkably let me wear her wedding dress as my costume! Unfortunately, our classes were split between several schools when we all entered junior high. Very few of my classmates followed the Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High/Potomac High that I did. Generally, only students from Park Boulevard, Cedar Drive, and the Marlow Madison Apartments were tracked that way, I believe. Overlook Elementary must have opened the following year, so all the kids from that apartment complex went there. Happily, we met up again at Stoddert. All in all, Silver Hill Elementary was an excellent school, and a good foundation for our later years.
