Moved to Deer Park Heights on Thanksgiving Day in 1955 from Southeast DC. I lived on Walnut Drive until the county renamed it to Deer Park Drive in the 60's. Right after graduating from Potomac in 1972, went to work at Atlantic Auto Service in the office and met my future husband who was the manager of the store at that time. We were married in December 1974 at Grace Brethren Church on St. Barnabas Road. Unfortunately, I lost my husband in September 2010 to lung cancer. I have a lot of nice memories from the old neighborhood. Use to hang around Melanie and Diana Gibson who lived on the corner of Akron and Deer Park Drive, Janice and Jerry Allport-their father also worked at Atlantic Auto, and Fred and Ernie Reckling. I knew quite a number of families who lived in Deer Park Heights: Stones, Kellers, Wesselmans, Roach, Cabana, Lavsa, McCormicks, Holmans, Purcells and Santana's just to name a few.

I lived in Marlow Heights when my father was stationed at Andrews AFB. I went to Sandymount and was so surprised to see my 1st grade class picture on this website. I lived there until 3rd grade and moved to Florida.I think I lived on 24thAve. (not sure) My friends were Marie Allacarti, Marlene Lutter and we lived next door to my babysitter, Linda Lovelace. I remember walking to school which seemed pretty far especially in the ice. I remember sledding down what I remember as a steep hill near a middle school. I remember running home to tell my mother that President Kennedy was killed. I have fond memories of playing in the street and of all the neighbors shooting fireworks on the fourth of July. I loved catching fireflies in the summer. I drove through the neighborhood in December of 2010 as my son and I were traveling to Pennsylvania for the holiday. The houses still look pretty good but seem so much smaller than I remember. Thanks for the memories.

I remember the Red Barn very well. When I saw the picture of the Red Barn it triggered chiled hood memories. I did eat at one when I was a kid. But I cannot recall where it was. I lived in California all my life. Do you know if there was one in the Hayward San Leandro area. I am sure I walked to it when I was a kid.

I have a lot of memories of Hillcrest Heights. We lived on Lyons Street. Our family included Eddie/Benny, Kathy, me Jean, Janice. We went to Sandymount, Stoddert and Potomac. We didn’t ride a bus until high school. We played hide and seek with the neighbors, (and it was okay to hide in the other neighbor’s yards). We played kick ball in the street, on a curb where you had to pay attention to the sound of oncoming cars, and our parents let us! LOL. I remember sledding down Keating Street after it snowed. Thank God there was a 4 way stop sign at the bottom of the hill. I can’t remember if we had enough sense to have a lookout for cars or not, but probably not! We used to have crab apple fights (boys against the girls). And they hurt when you get hit. We survived playing outside all the time! I went to all of my brother’s football and baseball games. He hated us cheering for him! We did it anyway. He played for the Silver Hill Boys Club, Stoddert and Potomac. I remember when the Iverson Mall was being built and we used to ride our bikes on the car garage ramps before it was open. I remember when there was a rickety old walking bridge where Olsen and Raleigh streets intersect (down the street from Stoddert). I hated walking across that bridge to go to the Marlow Heights Ally to go bowling. Most of the time we cut through the woods behind Stoddert. I don’t remember when they tore that bridge down and made it a road; it made it quicker and easier to get to Marlow Heights. I loved the royal burgers at Jr. Hot Shop and the Pizza from Pizza Pan. My Mom worked at the A&P. One of our chores was to walk to her work and go grocery shopping with her and then get a ride home. Ernestine from Pizza Pan called me and my twin sister Kathy (Little Sue’s) because she never knew which one of us was which and she knew we were Sue Harrell’s daughters. That was easier for her to remember. I understand memory loss now, darnit! The families that I remember in our neighborhood were the Neuland’s, Taylor’s (moved away), Miller’s, Long’s, Jeane’s (the Mormon’s), Hartonge’s (don’t know the spelling), Johnson’s, Brami’s, French’s, Cusato’s, Skinner’s (moved away), Alicardi’s, Baton’s, West’s. Our neighbor Mrs. Hallwick (I don’t know the spelling of her name either) used to drive me and Michael Neuland to summer school at Suitland High. And I remember many, many more families that were in the area that were involved with the boys club. Our parents didn’t just mean Mom and Dad; everybody was allowed to yell at us if we were doing something wrong. Marsha Limbacher was my best friend. She moved away in the 7th grade. We have kept in touch for 40 years. Kathy Barbour contacted me when our 30 year Potomac reunion took place. We went together and had a great time. We have kept in touch ever since. Julie Miller Stone contacted me through Facebook and we just had our first reunion. I am hoping for many more! She told me about this site. I moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1982. Then to Woodbridge in 1993. I had the good sense to move back to Maryland in 1995. I have an 18 year old son. I work in Washington, DC for a non-profit organization. I’ve been with them for 24 years. I’m getting ready to attend my first Steak in a Sack meeting.

Thank you for a stroll down memory lane. How can we ever forget those good old days. Even our parents had it so much easier back then. What a complicated and stressful life we have to live these days! Technology is great these days and will be better for our children and theirs and so on! My first job was at the Red Barn in "72" I remember the mini skirts were in and the manager was horrible, lol! Sexual harassment began for me on my first job! I use to babysit for the owners of steak and the sack. Can't wait to receive your news letters, Thank for sharing the now and then of Marlow Heights and surrounding area. You left out Oxon Hill though, we we're a big part of Marlow heights also ! Thanks Rosina Moffat-Tate

This site is awsome it has allowed me to reach so many friends that I have not seen in ages and can now re-connect with after 35 years. I have heard from friends from Jr high and it is amazing that we can remember the things we did that would not be allowed now.ExampleI remember cutting 4th period before a game running out the back door of Stoddard and going thru the whole in the fence thru the apartments (marlow heights) to the shopping center where Giant(still is)and steak in sack then home. Theree was a whole group of us too numerous to mention, some now are in law enforcement, lawyers, post office workers etc, that's right thatis clue as to who you were. Went to Potomac skipped (4th period) and went to the mc-donalds by the old PG County Police station(oxon-hill) and the library we got caught some-times but still did it again. Those were fun times. The thrill and the fun was not getting caught and if we did we always had the same line if parents were called so we all got in trouble together. I lost alot of hair, but never my friends. After all this time it is nice to know we are still friends just alittle more refind.

There used to be a "fort" that was built in the trees behind Benjamin Stoddart Jr. High, and we used it to skip school, Mr. Flynn never found us there. I also remember going to the Marlow Heights Theater, when it only had a single screen. And going to Steak in a Sack after school. My Mother worked at the Hecht Co. back then as a shortage clerk. I also remember the following people: Ron Dillon, Paul Dillon, Tammy Greer, Evelyn (Joan) Thomas, Janet Thomas, Eddie Lava, Joe Sweet, Teddy D'Angelo, Carmela Nickolosi, Rick Farell, and a lot of other people, wish I could see them all again, but living in Arizona makes that pretty hard but when I do come for a visit, I will stop in the Steak in a Sack...

I went to Sandymount all 6 years of Elementary School and Stoddart for 7th and 8th grade before moving to Virginia. My older Brother Steve graduated from Potomac in 1973 and my sister Liz graduated in 1975. Both of them went on to the University of Maryland. We moved to Virginia and I started High School in 9th grade. This was an adjustment because I still would of had one more year of Junior High. My parents were having a house built so we rented a house the first year while that was being built so I went to Gar-Field for my freshman year and then to Woodbridge 10-12 where I graduated in 1980. I am glad we made the move and still see friends from High School but I have many fond memories of growing up in PG county. As a matter of a fact I used to say I grew up in Woodbridge because that is where I went to High School but recently with out really thinking about it often say I grew up in PG county. When I say that people look at me in disbelief. Sometimes I get the comments that I grew up in the hood. I have to tell them that it was a great place to grow up. I compare it to how Arlington used to be before Arlington blew up. A nice working class neighborhood where your parents were either a government worker, cop, fireman, or tradesmen. Just a good place where all the neigbors knew each other and looked out for each other. We went to Church at Holy Family where it seemed like half the kids in our neighborhood went. We had kids bussed in our school from Green Valley when I was in 5th grade. I knew alot of the boys bussed to our school from football, basketball, and baseball at Silver Hill boys club. There are a few girls I had crushes on at Stoddart that I sometimes wonder what became of them.If anyone reads this who knows me don't hesitate to email me and we can catch up.

I worked as a paper boy ,no girls allowed then ,so I became Carl and put my ponytail under my hat,was skinny -as then and no one caught me,got a job @ ginosteak house and lied again,we were supposed to be 16 but we were poor and I was tall 14 and no snoopy computer big brother yet ha ha! We hung out at Arbyroast Beef and went to drive in movies, we scared ourselves walking through the cemetary.A bunch of us walked to Dc stadium/Kennedy ctr 2 see Rolling Stones without tickets stayed for whole concert saw Stevie Wonder too drank the wrong free koolaid but made it home ok,lot of violence poverty in se Dc burbs I saw MLKjr preach @ NYA Presbyter. church! Our papa had a cross burnt on his lawn and death threats due to being a white civil rights activist.I cried during the riots so afraid as the poor burnt the DC ghetto Why? When integration was mandated they had to bus white kids to my sibling's Jr high, we were already integrated in Forestville my first bf was black we only held hands there were coat hanger endings but not all poor kids get into"trouble". Ray lives in California now near good man Billy Blakeslee who intro'd me to Dort. I dated George Mazzola from District Heights 69-77...met him at the carnival @ Penn Mar . Good times! But VietNam killed the poor kids first and crime brought guns which killed a few more the highway killed even more...poverty sucks but those were our old stompin grounds!!

Really enjoying your website...thanks so much for all the hard work and dedication it has taken to you to create. As for us girls...we wore hot pants, dark hose , knee socks and of course high top Chucks.

I remember going to Docktor's Pet Center so that my Mother could get a canary she called "KennyNick" after the two guys that worked there. I remember getting an Orange Freeze from the Jr. Hot Shoppes, getting hair cuts at HairPair, getting family photos taken in the mall, the annual safe driving program and safe boating programs in the mall, taking trumpet lessons at the music store, buying a jacket and shotgun from Marvin's Sport City, eating at the fancy Chinese restaurant in the mall, I remember my Mom buying clothes at a women's clothing store called "This Is The Place!, the fancy gourmet store with all the aromas coming from it and taking Driver's Education from Easy Mathod Driving School in a small classroom in the Montgomery Ward. This is a great site!!!!!!!!!

My Band "Street Life" is Paul and Glenn Scimonelli from District Heights, and Julio Fonseca and Charlie Thomas from Silver Spring. We never forgot our music and could keep the crowd hopping all night. Give us a call if your interested or view or website, streetlifemusic.com. My mom bought all my cloths in Marloe Heights!
