Comment:
I came to the area in the late 70's. My parents adored my principal Mr. Callabucci(?) at Middleton Valley. I knew he went on to be a coach briefly at Crossland, wanted to know whatever happened to him. My family moved away in the 90's, and my parents always get nostalgic when they hear about the area on the news...

My first job ever was at the Jr Hot Shoppes, before there was an Inverson Mall, right after they first opened. The line to the counter stretched around the parking lot and we out grossed the top 3 McDonalds in the Metro area. That was hustling. And I worked for $1.10/hr. What eventually became the Iverson Mall parking lot was an empty field were I would go riding my bike thru the bike trails and bramble that was everywhere back there. Also worked at the Hobby Shop next to the store where the full service Hot Shoppes was. One of my last jobs before I moved away to school was at the 14th Street Marriott downtown. Great experience. Family liked to bowl, so we patronized the Bowl America (?) a lot. Mom was a league secretary and I was able to bowl an entire sheet of games for 25 cents! I even got to work there and participated in tearing out the old machines on one side in order to make way for what was back then the next generation of pin setters. Ohh! Our next door neighbor was a muscle man for the mafia although I didn't know it at the time. I never understood why all of a sudden he was gone and nobody would tell me where he went or when he would come home. His family continued to live there for years after his disappearance. Can anybody tell me whatever happened to Sandymount Elementary? It doesn't look right from Google Maps and the street level view looks like there is a chain link fence across the entrance. Can't believe all the huge trees that are on the streets. Nobody ever thought of planting trees at the street when I was growing up.

Really enjoyed the sub-page on Grits and Blocks, it helped fuel a conversation on the ridiculous violence now ongoing in the DC and PG African-American community over the latest Helly Hansen jackets, that are apparently "to die for." It was fun to reminiscence about those white working class greasers, who would never have paid anywhere close to $450 for a foreign-made winter jacket. Back then, all that fashion was very much union-made in the USA.

Wow it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Stan Duvall

I had the best childhood and think back with such fond memories because of our neighbors, the walk-to stores, and non-electronic devices. Hillcrest Heights was a great community where even then, a person felt safe walking to the Marlow Heights movie theater, Highs, Woolworths for snow cones, and most of all riding bikes with your friends to these places. Fondest memory of neighborhood friends' parents sitting on their porches on summer nights while we kids all played neighborhood hide-and-seek. The sound of kids voices was a constant in our neighborhood on Lyons Street. I miss this time period tremendously and wish that my kids can have the same great childhood experience that they can pass on to their kids. "Hi" to the Rackeys, Fortunatos, Starkes, Galligans, Nigros and too many to name for making this happen.

My life long friend, Lloyd Schermerhorn, told me about this site on 9/26/2012. We go way back to the late 50's and early 60's. Silver Hill Boy's Club baseball, bowling duckpin's, Saturday night's at the Oxon Hill Firehouse. My other real go friend, Lenny Danelle, was the local barber in Suitland. He would cut all the Guy's hair. He gave my two son's thier first haircut's almost forty years ago. My last time at Steak in A Sack was, in 1972. I worked in the First National Bank of Southern Maryland at the Marlow Heights Center. Mr. Ralph Sonntag, had the hobby shop in the center. In high school, we were never late. Our bus driver was a race car driver and we had one of the first Metro Style Buses in 1966. The buses then did not have any engine mod's like the buses of today, as we went down Temple Hills Road, we reached 70 MPH. daily. That's all for now, Thank-You Michael A. Baxter

Went thru the old neighborhood of Temple Hills Rd, Portal ave and Walnut St. Looks like a damned war zone!! What a shame. Temple Hills Elem is a pile of rubble. I remember walking to school with all the kids in the neighborhood. We all had some good times then, Jay Cicala, Linda Patriarca (my wife of 43 yrs), Joe Lagundo, Bobby Green, Kathy Buckler...everyone is spreadout all over the country now. One good thing is my original'61 Fender Strat is a antique just like me!!! Keep up the great work on the site...we need to remember the good times growing up.

For the most part my years were just catching the bus, just getting a "C", and just existing from day to day. For excitement I would walk from Farley Pl. to the Orange Freeze at I verson Mall. I would order some fries, and a Orange Freeze and walk back. I was in the high school in my 11th and 12 grades. To express my idenity I wore a derby and took up the ugly habit of smoking. I quit in 1989. Since then my live has been exciting. I rose to the rank of Captain in the Army, married a beautiful lady, and have three kids. I liked Potomac, but during those years it was so much like "Leave it to Beaver. I wish it was more like the "Fresh Prince of Belair. Maybe then I would of coped a feel sooner.

Grew up in a Military family, moved quite a bit but always returned to the DC area for Andrews AFB or the Pentagon. I attended Surrattsville elementary and 7th grade at Surrattsville Jr High when we lived in Clinton Maryland off of Kirby Road in Summit Hall area. I remember Mr Baker for my 6th grade teacher, he started as a substitue and became our permanent teacher. He taught the class how to do perspective drawing, how great was that! At Crossland we lived in the Westchester neighbor. I remember Mr Wurzbach (sp) for homeroom at Crossland. There was a Ms Cleaver who taught either 11 or 12 grade English class at Crossland. I can't recall my Topics of Democracy teach, but he was great. I can clearly see his face and hear his voice but can't recall his name at the moment. In my neighborhood during High School we had Charlie Novotny, Bob Benefield, Rick Linkus, Mike King/Pete Bozick (Catholic School guys), Dave Johnson. At school Jeff Hermann, the Bille(i)t twins, Ross Erwin and many other people. It was a great time to grow up in the Clinton/Camp Springs area to say the least and attend a brand new modern High School.

My story is on myspace listed under facebook at brianremembered Hope you have the time to look at it-- I was a mess in high school. I wasn't much better when I went away to college. Luckily, I found a wonderful woman and we have been married for 45 years. When we were 34 a drunk driver followed our 8 years old son into our driveway. We have both worked very hard since 1981 to help stop drunk driving. I did it myself when I was young- because, as I stated above, I was a mess and stupid. It does come a time in life though when everyone should know better. Since our son was killed, there have been over 500,000 more sons, daughters, brothers and sisters killed. Since 1981 there have been at least 2,500,000 people that are seriously and permanently damaged. If you get a chance please go to our myspace website or facebook or Youtube and take a look at the videos. Laugh the first time you see it when you see my sideburns and goofy glasses, and then look at it to listen to the message. At this point in our lives, we cannot continue to allow this to take our grandchildren from us. I went from being skinny to being fat--- I was just the right weight for about 15 minutes.- Thanks Bert Brian Remembered Facebook http://www.facebook.com/brianremembered Brian Remembered YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/triedntrue4 MySpace Brian Remembered http://www.myspace.com/brianremembered

Too many memories... what can I say? I remember being a quiet kid who played sports, hung out at Marlow Heights Shopping Center, Rec Center, and Iverson Mall, Bowling Alley. I was basically a good kid but wasted lots of time hanging out in all the wrong places.

Longtime Temple Hills residents may very well remember a hiddious rattled-out '66 Plymouth Belvadere. That was my late grandmother's auto. I was her care-giver (she was too neurotic to be left alone for any period of time). We occupied a two story duplex on Dallas Drive from '69 until she became unable to care for heresel around 2001, and it became necessary to make other arranements. PG county holds very few ggod memories for me, as I was basically held prisoner there. The house on Dallas Drive sold for $100,000, but I never had any financial benefit from it. My (late) father was a drunk and a gambler, and its gone now. Thanks for the "tour." Let's touch base sometime. Edward
