Lived on Essex Ct behind Iverson Mall till I was about 7 then moved to Leisure Dr in Marlow Hghts. Best memories are my sister taking me to Steak in a Sack and me falling asleep in the booth in the back with the owner, Zack sitting with me. My brother and sister were friends with Dennis, the owners son. Loved going there cause Zack would spoil me and give me whatever I wanted. Can't remember the name of the guy who used to do most of the cooking but he made a mean Steak in a Sack and I loved them!.. Haven't had one in over 35 years now and would give anything to go back to that time. Thanks a million for this page! Next time you're at Steak in a Sack, tell them Ted and Pats little sister said HI!!!

I moved to Marlow Heights from Fairfax Village the Spring of 6th grade. My Dad drove me back and forth to Anne Beers Elementary to finish the school year. I began middle school in Marlow Heights in the Fall. One of my first friends was Bonnie Carlson who lived in the Deer Run section of Hillcrest Heights. Ironically, we've remained friends all these years and she lives down the street from me now. I remember the fellas more than the girls (ha ha!). Made many memories at the apartment swimming pool behind Hecht Co.; at the bowling alley on St. Barnabus Road; at Steak in a Sack; the carnivals at Hillcrest Heights; going to 10/23 and Harrigan's; cruisin' Hot Shoppe Jr. and the Mighty Mo; slumber parties; Ocean City weekends; and falling in and out of love. They were the best of times and the worst of times, but I wouldn't change any of it.

Chuck, thank you so much for putting this wonderful site together. When I started reading your site so many memories started flowing and then seeing your picture I recognized you immediately. I'm sure it was challenging to summarize your journey through the years since it seems you've had quite the adventure! I spent all night taking a trip down memory lane. The names and faces of friends and acquaintances from school came back like it was just yesterday. Of course I started thumbing through the yearbook (1972) and found my first school-girl crush... Mr. Zeman! Ahhhh be still my heart! I would love to travel back and see the school and neighborhood. I'm sure things are a wee bit different from how I envision. I'll continue enjoying all the postings and maybe even reconnecting with some old, once lost friends... take good care... Vania

Our Schuler family moved to 6265 Akron Street in 1953 when it was brand new. I think my parents paid about $15,000 for the duplex. At the time I was the oldest of 3 children which ultimately grew to 8 -- me, Richie, Nancy, Mikey, Terry, Janet, Patty, and Jeff. We were always outside playing, even in the rain. There was a sink hole at the end of our driveway where it met the sidewalk. It would fill up with water when it rained and I would sit there and make mud pies. Also, we would make rafts out of popcicle sticks and float them down the gutter when it stormed. We played cowboys and Indians in the woods behind our house and had lots of paths in the woods. We'd climb trees and hike down to the creek. I walked that creek a lot. My best friends in Deer Park were Debbie LaMay and Joyce O'Steen. Debbie and I were friends through High School. I saw her once after. She was married, living in VA and had 2 boys. She also has an older brother, Jack LaMay. Joyce Osteen's brother, Jack, was a paperboy when they were just building the Marlow Overlook Apts. One early morning when he was coming back through the Apartments, he went face-first through a plate glass window. He got massive cuts to his face and was lucky to make it home to get help. They moved away before we did. I wonder what happened to them. I saw Jimmy and Cathy Coughlin posted on here. I remember Jimmy's bike accident. I and think my brother, Richie too, would go up and keep Jimmy company when he was healing after the accident and he couldn't come out and play. There were so may kids in the neighborhood. Always someone to play with, ball games in the street, hide and seek at night, sledding down Reeds Hill. That was the gathering place. We didn't have air conditioning, so when we HAD to go to bed at night, we would be glued to the windows to see who was still out. We'd be calling back and forth to friends, bird calls, etc. and our parents would be yelling from down stairs for us to go to bed. The Albrect boys lived next door and their bedroom was across from our girls bedroom. They were always at the window trying to peek in on us. We would go to Hilltop Farm by Rosecroft occasionally to see the horses. We would play Tether Ball at Karen Smith's driveway on Beaumont St. There was always a line of kids waiting to play. One summer, the Hotchkiss' cousin, Danny I think, stayed with them for the summer. We were only about 10 years old. Karen Smith's Mom would let us play records in the living room and Danny would teach us how to dance. He was our age, and such a good dancer! We would sell lemonade on the corner and then take our profits and walk up to Drug Fair in Marlow Heights and get Cherry Cokes or Root Beer Floats at the counter. I babysat a lot -- 25 cents an hour. I think I started when I was 10. I had a lot of experience with all those brothers and sisters! When I'd get a little money saved I'd walk up to the shopping center and buy clothes at Lerner's and shoes at Thom McCann. Can't forget Woolworths either. I worked one summer at the Gourmet Food Store at Iverson Mall and had to wear a "Heidie" outfit. I actually bought my wedding dress at Hecht's. The Kelly's -- Who I just saw on the FB page -- lived a few houses down and would babysit them. My sisters played with them. Once, one of the Kelly baby's was choking on something and everyone was outside with the baby screaming and crying. My Mom ran out and took the baby and turned her/him upside and slapped on his/her back and the piece of candy or whatever popped out. I went to Silver Hill Elementary in the first grade and had Mrs. Bailey. There were only 4 classrooms in the school. I remember our class making homemade ice cream in a big container outside with the snow. My Dad attended that school and grew up in the house right across the street. His Dad had a big greenhouse in the back yard and grew prize-winning Dahlia's. The school and house were torn down when they widened the road and built the apartments there. My Granddad was forced to move by the County. Second Grade I went to Holy Family and was in the first graduating class. What friends we made there! I saw a post that Jimmy Bellows passed away. I frequently tell the story about when Sister Alice Christine (8th Grade)got so upset with him she called him "A Big WALRUS!!!!" He and everyone else in the class burst out laughing and she ran out of the class red-faced. She was a sweet nun and took a lot of stuff from our class. Kids would tape things one her habit when she walked down the aisle, you name it. I remember once my desk was the last one in the last aisle, right before the entrance to the cloak room in the back. Eddie Flannagan was acting up (class clown) and Sister Alice made him sit behind me. He kept inching his desk back little by little until he was in the cloak room. Sister finally looked and said "Where's Eddie?" "Mr. Flannagan, where are you?" and he said, "I'm right here!" and everyone, including her cracked up. I had to sit next to Eddie at one point for a while and I would always get into trouble for laughing. David Cushman, Eddie's good friend sat in front of me and Eddie beside me. I was in stitches laughing all day. I also saw Sally O'Donnell and Carol Fedorko posted here. I think Sally was in my class most every year and we also played Basketball, Softball, Cheerleading, etc., Sally's Mom and Winky Doonis' Mom would haul us kids to practices and games. Great times. Lovely, caring, and giving people. We would hang out at Winky's house. Winky was going "steady" with Tommy Fedorko. I remember once riding on the bus back from teen club of something and Winky and Tommy were in the seat behind me. Tommy was softly singing Beatles tunes more to himself but I could hear it very distinctly. It was so nice. Whenever I hear those songs I think of him and that time. So sorry he passed away. Good memories. Some Puglisi's and Reidy's posted as well. I would walk from my house up to theirs and Colleen Smith's. Linda Puglisi, Mary Reidy, Colleen and I would hang out together. We would usually go to Linda's or Colleen's and play records and/or games. Has there ever been a Holy Family Reunion? I wish we had one. After Holy Family came LaReine, just 9th grade for me. There I became good friends with Mariann Schults, Stephanie Shema, and Linda Gorowspi (sp?). We were "Crema's Gang." We walked and walked and walked all over Marlow and Hillcrest Heights. Hung out at the "Park" smoked cigarettes, and followed the boys around. If we weren't doing that we were at Mariann's hanging in the basement. Once we had a Séance. I remember it was the four of us, Ice, Mike Shea, and possibly Billy Goheens, maybe more. We were all around the table with a Wee-gee? board I think, eyes closed holding hands and then heard a noise. Mike Shea jumped up scared to death and ran outside. So funny! I think Ice was the culprit for the noise. Barbara Deale posted. I remember she lived next door to John Maiers. I was at Barbara's one afternoon after school and we were playing on the phone calling boys pretending we were someone else. Girlplay! John's gone, too. Such a shame. Billy Ellington, too. I went steady with both, for a couple of weeks each I think in the 8th grade. I remember John and Billy walked to my house on Christmas Day to bring me a stuffed animal Billy had gotten for me. It was snowing like crazy and they were freezing when they got there. Mom gave them some hot chocolate and got them warmed back up. They each went on to different girl friends but we were all still friends. After 9th Grade in LaReine, I went to Potomac for a few months and then we moved to Camp Springs. I would walk back to Marlow to visit friends. One summer I worked at the Tastee Freeze in Morningside. I soon developed good friendships at Crossland, mostly gang at Middleton Lane -- Sharon Wright, Linda Aley, the Ludwigs, Fawlvers, Woods, Guinns, Gary Colye, etc. Also best friends with Debbie (and I can't remember her last name -- her mother was a Lloyd). Hung with Mattie Anderson, Bonnie Sackman, Karen, Gail Talton, Linda Hartman, Diane Money, Debbie LaMay, Tina Bellavin and more. Tina and I worked together for 30 some years at US DOT NHTSA in DC. We also carpooled together most of that time. I was in her wedding to Artie Foley and they are still together in Clinton, MD. I married Melvin Mitchell who was from Coral Hills, Morningside, and Suitland and hung around with the Donald (Duck) Woods and the Ludwigs. We've been married 42 years and have a daughter and son and two grand daughters. We are retired and living the good life in FL. We get together and go cruising with Pat Cavey (Anacostia/District Heights) and wife Lee (Lee-Lee) Keehan (District Heights/LaReine). Hope I didn't overuse the space. It just all came out! Love to hear from you. I will dig out and send some old photos. I have First Communion and Holy Family Graduating Class. Also pics in Deer Park. Thanks Chuck for all your work on this!

My brother, Mike Johnson, has encouraged me to investigate this website as it has opened up many fond memories to him from our childhood experience of living in Suitland and Oxon Hill Maryland from 1964 to 1967. Up until that time, we had always lived in Amarillo, TX and our father was in the Air Force. In 1964, he was transferred to Washington DC. So in the summer after my 6th grade, we were suddenly relocated to that area and the Starcrest Apartments in Suitland, MD was a highly recommended place for our family to move to. Mike and I loved it immediately.........living in an apartment complex with a pool, rec center and lots of kids our ages. And we being from Texas, made for immediate stardom, curiosity and friends! Our mother endured that apartment life with 4 children for only so long, until it was time to move into a house. So in 1966, we moved over to Oxon Hill and lived out the rest of our father's term there, which was ended by his retirement from the AF. We then moved back to Amarillo, taking our beloved memories of those "magical" Marlowe Heights days and nights with us. To this day, I remain grateful for the wonderful experience of living there and plan to go back and visit someday.

Hi, I have several posts in here. Right now, I'm seeking information on the whereabouts of David Jenkins, who lived across from us on Manor Drive (1957), or Steve Rice, who lived just off Manor Drive on Woodland Blvd. I hope someone has a positive response, it's extremely important that I locate Steve; and hopefully his mother.

What a thrill to see so many names from the past. I still remember Tommy Hessler, Jamie Lowe, so many others. Also sadly remember Bobby Dize death in 73. Too young! I recall Mighty Mo in District Heights. Worked in Iverson Mall at Clarks Music for a long time. Also Mont. Wards. Things were wild and the country was just getting over the Kennedy assasinations, MLK, and Vietnam. Still cannot believe I accomplished anything but as kids I think most of us were just like any other generation.

I googled "Peters Jackets" and found this site. Sure brought back memories. I was there as a timid block in Suitland. Had all the right clothing but I certainly was not a tough guy. Moved to Oxon Hill around '67 and played drums in a band. We had two gigs, a friend's birthday party and a PTA meeting at Flintstone Elem. Thanks, Mike

I ran around Marlow Heights, from the late 50s to the middle 60s. I remember the Hot Shoppe, 10-23 Rip & Kays, Shelter Room, Sea Shell, Sonny Brooke tavern, and of course Super Chief Driven-in on Indian Head Hyw. And how about all the girls that moved into South East Washington that worked for the FBI. There were 2 and 3 girls that lived together in one apartment. Talk about shooting gold fish in a barrel. One night at the Hot Shoppe Myself and Steve Moore got locked up twice the same night by Hot Shoppe Harry the cop. What a great time to be a young guy in those days.

I loved our house and big yard. We lived on Leland Drive in Oxon Hill. The street was a dead-end with a cement barricade. On the other side was a steep hill that lead to Potomac High School. It was great for sleigh riding on snow days. We crawled under the fence, a few times, to watch football games. School was a 1-mile walk each way; we never thought anything of it. We got a bus when I was in the sixth grade; the year we moved. Our first pet was a duck from Woolworths in Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights. Remember they used to sell them at Easter? Glen Echo (vague memory), Aquasco Speedway, the PG County Fair in Upper Marlboro, Toys R Us on St. Barnabas Road, and the list goes on and on. Does anyone know what happened to the Owens family who resided on Manor Drive? Tommy, Johnny, Patty and Barbie. They lived a few houses down, behind us. I'd like to know what happened to you all. It's fun to see old friends on FB, etc., and catch up.

This is insane! I grew up in a different part of the county and did not spend much time in Southern PG when I was a kid but in the Rt 450 corridor (Bladensburg, Landover Hills, Lanham, New Carrolton and Seabrook)the "Grit" tradition thrived! I have to admit membership in a different crowd ("Mods", later "heads") that loved to hate the kids we more often called greasers. Yesterday on a whim I Googled "Banlon peters jacket works chucks" just to see what would happen. A search like this could have locked onto anything around the globe with all the elements but it came home to roost right in good old PG county. Can you believe it? Chuck, What a cool page!
