My fondest memories are from the Marlow Heights/Hillcrest Heights area! I remember walking to the Elementary with my brothers and sisters and to the Jr High for school for me and I even remember walking to Potomac Sr High if I missed the bus. I lived for a short time on Akron Street and I also lived on the street right beside the Movie Theatre for a short time. I lived on Bellbrook Court too. It is funny what memories you retain and hold dear to your heart and the friends who you loved so much but lost contact with down the roadway of life. Big hugs to all of ya!

Grew up on Afton St. Attended Overlook Elem. My family moved from the area in 1974. I went to Gandy Goose. My family was very active in the Boys and Girls Club of Siver Hill. Fond memories of bowling every Saturday at the bowling alley, and playing and sled riding at Oxon Run Park. Things sure have changed around there. Lynn Hill Apartments and Sam's Carwash. Who would have ever thought they would have a metro station there. .99 cent records at GC Murphys, and playing behind the 7-11 at what we called clay hills.

Lived on Essex Court right accross from Iverson Mall. My three older brothers worked for Hot Shoppes Jr.. Martin Tillet was my 6th Grade teacher at Sandymount. Moved out of the area in 1994 and have never been back since. I'm living in Orange County here in California and work in Los Angeles for the Army Corps of Engineers. Anyone remember Pagoda7 in Iverson Mall. When I was older and didn't know any better I worked at Pohanka Honda/Oldsmobile on St. Barnabus Rd, and Don Albertos Pizza in the Marlow Heights Shopping center next to Baskin Robins. In High School had a job doing janitorial work with a few guys from Potomac, Friendly, McNamera, and Crossland working for Mr. Nicolosi (His Brother's family were neighbors back in the 70s).

What a great site -- and a delightful memory jolter! I grew up off St. Barnabas Road (behind Father Henry's church, otherwise known as St. Barnabas Episcopal) -- graduated from Potomac by way of Temple Hills Elementary, Barnaby Manor Elementary, and G. Gardner Shugart Jr. High. (Didn't anyone else go to Shugart???) I'm spreading the word about this website -- thank you!!

Fond memories of a long past life. I also worked at Jr. Hot Shoppes as my first job. Haven't worked fast food since, and still don't want to. Sandymount Elem School, Benj Stoddard, and Potomac HS (graduated in 1969). Mr. Puffenburger... Virgil was fun to pick at during Jr HS. Went to school under the name Marc Mendez, which was changed tin 1974 to Dickson. Marlow Theatre... if I had a penny for each time I had to change the marque, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. Great website... thanks for the memory walk.

What a great site. All the pictures and notes brought back so many good memories. I lived on 23rd Parkway and went to Hillcrest Heights Elementary, Stoddart and graduated from Potomac in 1973. I remember spending alot of days at Iverson Mall, usually when we were supposed to be at school and shopping with my mom at Marlow Heights and also hanging out at Jr. Shoppes (or Shoppes as we called it). I worked at Woolworth's for awhile in my senior year. Your website has brought back memories I haven't thought about in years. I hope to hear from anyone who visits the guestbook and share some memories. I only live about an hour away from the old area now but haven't been up there for ages.

Grew up on St. Clair Dr. and 23rd Parkway in the 60's and 70's. Went to Hillcrest Heights Elementary, Stoddert Jr High and Potomac. Hillcrest Heights Shopping center had a Safeway and an A&P, along with Candys Hardware and can't forget the Rexall Drug store. My first job was as a dishwasher at Steak N A Sack in Marlow Heights Shopping Center between Giant Food and the Hechts. Use to go to the all night Drugfair after work. Had a friend that lived in Marlow Madison Apartments, now Marlow Towers Condos. Saw many movies at the Marlow (only 1 screen back then). 15 cent hamburgers at the Jr. Hot Shop in front of Iverson Mall. Great sight, thanks for the memories.

I do remember the foot bridge at the end of Raleigh Road. My early memories also were of the creek and the woods, that ran from Culver and Raleigh down to the foot bridge. Now they are apartments. My two older brothers built a tree fort across from our house. My aunt and uncle with their six kids lived around the corner on Akron. It's so great to see the old pictures of the hood (place where we grew up). I will try to find some old pictures and send them over to you. Later Clark

I really enjoyed your site! I grew up in Marlow Heights from 1974 - 1981. I attended Holy Family, La Reine, and Potomac Senior High. We just haunted the shopping center, the movie theater and Iverson Mall. Baskin Robbins had a single cone for 21 cents!! Returning a few Pepsi bottles thrown into the grass along Branch Ave. always got you a cone at B-R. If we were lucky, we got enough money to go to Orange Bowl, at the mall, and get some pizza and hang out by the fountain. I worked at the key shop in Montgomery Wards... cutting keys, engraving stuff, and sprinkling key dust on people as they rode down the escalator. Also worked at Arthur Treachers... the grease from the fryers was good moisterizer for our over-permed hair. We liked to roller skate at the Forestville Roller Rink... It was Grit Heaven. Somehow, all the sweat on the nylon shirts seemed cool at the time.... After American Grafitti came out, there were grits everywhere... we loved it! Later, it was all about Frampton Comes Alive and Ted Nugent (How many times did we hear someone trying to learn Cat Scratch Fever on a new guitar?), Foreigner and concerts at the Capitol Center.

I grew up in Hillcrest - attended Green Valley Elementry and Stoddard. Many fond memories of the Hillcrest shopping center - Murphy's 5 and 10 and all the rest - The Grand Union Shopping center at the end of 23rd st with Highs - 10 cents a scoop! I remeber haunting Iverson Mall - had great fun there occupying space and hanging with my friends. Shopping there was great - Spencers - some oriental place with water beds and blacklight posters it was the place to go for anything you needed. All of it - was a great time to be alive and young. I was there just yesterday visiting the area and it all looks just about the same.

Great surprise to find a site dedicated to this area of Maryland and to see and read stories from folks that have memories of life here during the 60's and 70's. I hope more folks find the site and can make a contribution that reflects their experience and feelings of this place and time.
