Most of my memories of growing up from age 7 on were in that area. Places include Forest Heights, Birchwood City, Glassmanor, Oxon Hill, Kirby Hill, River Ridge, Fort Washington, Marlow Hights, Hillcrest Heights, Temple Hills and other neighborhoods. Some areas were too rural to even have names when we lived there. I even taught for no more than a year each at Suitland JHS and La Reine. I remember going to the Woodies in Iverson Mall after my orthodontist appointments and the Hecht's in Marlow Heights. Heck, I remember when Eastover had a Woodies and the Hot Shoppes across the DC line at Southern Avenue SE. The chocolate milk shakes, chicken noodle soup, Mighty Moes, etc.

Its unbelievable the names that I see in this guessbook (memories) and the places we have all spread out to. Yes, mom and dad are still in the same house on the same street in Marlow Heights and prolly always will be!! Old Beaumont Street pretty much stills looks the same and believe it or not, there are still a few 'original' families living there from the 60s & 70s!! Keep up the great work Chuck!!!

Comment:
I loved the carnival that came every year to the Marlow Hgts. Shopping Center parking lot. I lived on the corner of St. Clair Dr. & Kenton Place...you could see my house from the very top of the ferris wheel! Shopping with my mom there when I was little...going to Little Bo Peep (clothes) and Woolworths (and getting lunch at the counter & popping a balloon to see how much you'd pay for a banana split) There was a photography studio in the shopping center at one of the exits...my baby picture hung in their front window until I was 15 years old! Going out without adults for the first time to Marlow Hgts movie theater (1 screen - Pippy Longstocking) and eating at Jr. Hot Shoppes! I could go on & on! Hanging out on the "corner" with the Gaylors, Smallwoods....

Comment:
What a great place to grow up! We played outside all day and didn't lock our doors. I lived at 2308 Olson Street, which was a great street for sledding in the snow. When I went to Benjamin Stoddard, my dog would sometimes follow me to the school and I would have to walk him home then go back to school. I loved going to Iverson Mall. It was such a cool place to hang out. We lived there from 1959 until my parents moved in 1974, while I was in college. I think I've only been back twice in all those years but plan on going again in the next month or so to cruise around and see the sights.

Chuck, Thank you for allowing us all to share memories of Marlow Heights thru your website. Although I was very young (age 2 to 6) I remember living in Marlow Heights Apartments located behind the Shopping Center. My fondest memories include watching our groceries at Safeway being rolled in carts (on steel wheels) to the outside of the store. I also remember the Red Barn Restaraunt and Iverson Mall (especially at Christmas). I attended Temple Hills Baptist Church back then (Rev. Merrill). I really miss my friends at THBC. Thank you again for all your wonderful work on your website!!

Hello Chuck! Finally got around to signing your book...we left Forestville when I was 11 and moved to St. Mary's County (and I see so many of us ended up down here!). I have great memories of when Iverson Mall was first built and it was so cool to walk above the traffic and watch the cars go under! We used to go to Steak in a Sack, too, I still try to eat there whenever I find myself up in that area. They used to have those little jukeboxes at the tables and my Dad would let us pick our own songs. Their food is as good as ever and I think the place is still owved by the same family. And, of course, we always went to the Marlow Theatre, or sometimes to the drive-in in Oxon Hill when the weather was nice. Hope your search is panning out for you, talk to you later! Denise

Wow - Yes many memories! We moved to Hillcrest around my 1st birthday. We lived on the last block of 24th Ave towards the district. The best neighborhood and every block was filled with kids. My brother and I went to Green Valley then to Stoddard. We moved from Hillcrest in the summer of '73 to Tantallon(Fort Washington) - just a few miles away but far enough to loose touch with everyone! What a time we had at Stoddard - Wow - Tammy Greer and Susan Glenn - so happy to see you on this guest book - Where is Brenda Friday? What happened to Donna Weaver, CeCe Boltz, Brian Adelman, Steve Lund, Emilia Mirabile,Liz Salvatore or Tom Southall to name a few? I ended up at Friendly Sr '76, went to College then moved to the NJ Shore - met my husband at an annual party back in Maryland - he went to Potomac '75- Tim Reidy - and due to his job with Amtrak we have moved to Montana, Md and now Colorado ..looks like Calif is next! I remember just "owning" Iverson Mall with a few other mall rats. Jr. Hot Shoppes was a 2nd home for a time and Marlow Height Theater was it - no multi-plexes. I remember the carnival that would come every summer to Marlow Heighs without fail - what fun! Had alot of fun in Chorus singing and playing the piano - Ms Galligan was sooooo Cool. We probably grew up in the last of an innocent era - when walking home from school was ok, playing hide and go seek till after dark and riding your bike without a helmet was just normal (not exactly safe!) Great times and memories. My brother had great friends from Potomac- Jimmy Szymkowitz, "Frenchy" Secere, Timmy Allwine (who was in the Peperment Pipers at Stoddard with my brother), Jeff Newman - to name a few - Great memories!!! Mom was the French Teacher at many public schools until the PTA took it out of the budget!! Thanks Chuck!!!

My family moved to Hillcrest Heights in 1957. My sisters, Kathleen, Kelly and Kristine and my brother Michael all went to Hillcrest Heights Elementary, Benjamin Stoddert and Potomac HS. I had lots of family in the area and have great memories growing up in Hillcrest Heights. I remember my family getting together and having crabs at the house($5.00 a bushel) but the kids wanted pizza so we got pizza from Giavoni's - they had great pizza. There was a pizza restaurant on the corner of A&P (can't remember the name) and had a hair salon about the restaurant. Kelly Higgs and I got married May 2004 - Kelly grew up in Temple Hills - went to Tauney (sp?), Crossland and Potomac. We knew each other at Potomac and kept in touch over the years - It's great to be with someone that experienced the same childhood in the Marlow Heights area. Just went to Captain Pell's Crabhouse in Fairfax, VA and met Rick Pell the owner who lived on 24th Avenue - how cool is that!

I truly enjoyed your site and it was great to here and see what others I grew up with and went to school with for so many years have done and where they are today. I spent 27 years in the ARMY going all over the world and could never make a class reunion and lost track of so many people. Your site brought back allot of great memories.

I grew up in Oxon Hill, but I worked in Marlow Heights at the BP/Scott station (next to Arthur Treacher's) from 1975 to 1978. I also worked in the Float 'n Smoke. I got a diploma from Potomac High School, but didn't spend much time inside--more often we were smoking in the parking lot or in the Magic Bus. I remember the Red Barn and Iverson Mall. A family I knew in Temple Hills had chickens in their yard--I'll bet there is a law against that, now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

You need to add the Catholic Schools to the site. Holy Family 1971 to 1980. Bishop McNamara 1980 to 1984.

Hey Chuck How are you? Even though I'm not from Marlow Heights, the conversation you and I had at the gym reminded me, and brought awareness of the things we had in common so many years ago. I wish you luck on your relocation efforts. I will visit your site often. Rick
