Comment:
Growing up in the Hillcrest/Marlow Heights area was great. I remember the bike rides with my friends or walking to the shopping center to High's to get an ice cream cone for $.05 without parents going with you. Of course those days it was safe to do so. The Pizza Pan in the Hillcrest Hgts shopping center was a good place too. Steak in a Sack was good, but the Hot Shoppes Restaurant was the best. Sadly enough I also remember when they built Iverson Mall. It was the first indoor shopping center in the area. In my teen years, when I drove, I mostly hung out in the Suitland, District Heights area and Parkland bowling alley. It's sad to go back to Hillcrest/Marlow area to visit my parents. The area has changed SO much. But when I do go there, I relive all the old memories. Life was so much easier back then and more carefree .......

I have so many great memories of Hillcrest/Marlow Heights. We left there in August of 1970. I lived there from 1963 until 1970. When I found this site, it really brought so much from that time flooding back. I'm hoping to take my partner there to see it all soon. It's been too long since I've been back. I remember Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken, Jr. Hot Shoppes, Iverson Mall, wasn't there a Hot Shoppes cafeteria at Marlow Heights Shopping Center too? I also remember the Marlow Heights theater, the Hecht's (and that lunch room they had there by the entrance) Got much of my early music there as well as my first copies of the Lord of the Rings books. I guess it's all changed now, but it was a great place to be in the 60's

Born in 1964 and lived in Suitland until I was out of College in 1987. Took a job after several years after college and never moved back. Will always be a local team fan (skins, caps, terps, wizards, O's). Some places I remembered that no longer exist: Peoples Drug, Jumbo Food Store, Electric world (arcade in Forestville). The Peoples drug store in the early 70's actually had a soda fountain area. I also remember Highs Dairy Stores and numerous mom and pop type business. Earnest Hardware and Kings Five and Dime in downtown Suitland.

Growing up in Hillcrest and Marlow Heights was a real experence that I will never forget for all of the great times and a few bad ones. My wife and I still stay in contact with a lot of old freinds from those days and that is the best part of our memories for the ones that are still here and those who are gone. I get to play golf once a year with 12 to 15 guys from Hillcrest and Marlow heights and Temple Hills up in Carroll Valley Pa. every May. I really look forward to that trip every year to see a lot of old freinds and have a great time. If anyone wants to email me, please do! Great web site, this was a good ideal.

I really enjoyed reading about your story. For some reason I have so many fond memories of marlow and hillcrest heights. In fact I almost filled out an application to join Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and run with them. I am a volunteer EMT and Firefighter in Prince William County, Va. and decided driving to Prince George's County and juggling traffic and children was not a good option. Anyway, thanks so much for the memories and hope to read more soon.

I grew up on Iverson St. in between the Iverson Mall and the Hillcrest Hgts. shopping center. I wouln't trade growing up anywhere else in the world during that era. I had great friends, played baseball for the Hillcrest Hgts. Boys Club, which was behind the G.C. Murphy Co. dime store in the shopping center and also played for the Silver Hill Boys Club. When I die if I had one wish I woulld go back in time to the early 60's and stay there thru eternity. Life was much more simple during the 50's, 60's and beginning of the 70's and then this country went the wrong way with all the drugs and hippy freaks, etc. I think about the past all the time, but like everything time moves on and everything changes, Oh well!, but it don't cost anything to daydream about it.

Thought I had signed the guestbook, but I "guest" not! I grew up at 2604 Kenton Place. What a great place! Could walk to all my friend's houses, walk to school, walk to Iverson Mall and the shopping center. I remember seeing "Flipper" at the movie theater. Somewhere in a scrapbook, I have the stub. Thirty-five cents. On saturdays, we could go to Sandymount and see movies too. I don't remember the name of the series, but it was about the adventures of a talking mule. Haircuts were always at Fred's Barber Shop. Chucks (high tops) always came from the Hobby Shop near Freds. That same hobby shop is where all the AMT 1/32 scale model cars came from. Boy, when we moved to Temple Hills in 1965, it was waaaaay out in the sticks!!

Love the site. I saw the article in The Enterprise today and just had to check it out. I grew up in nearby Camp Springs and for many years my Grandmother lived in the apartments behind the Marlow Heights Shopping Center. I can remember playing in the woods between the apartments and the shopping center. My orthodontist and dentist were right in the mall. My mom didn't drive yet the first year I had my braces and she used to send me there after school in a taxi and my dad would pick me up later. Sometimes I hung out at the mall and sometimes went to my Grandmothers apartment if dad was going to be late. I remember getting all sorts of cool stuf at Spencers and some other import type store downstairs where they sold incense burners, inflatable pillows and all the accessories wannabe hippies needed. I bought my first alblum, Bobby Sherman, there at Iverson Mall. For two summers in college I worked at Steak in a Sack. I remember helping "Little Zachy" - then the owners son -- with his math homework for summer school so he could finall graduate! I remember the Marlow Heights police force too. There was a young officer I thought was really hot.

I attended elementary school at Silver Hill school, which was on, or very close to, the location of the Marlow Heights shopping center. I reached the school by rding through the Waring (or Warren?) farm. In my youth, they began construction behind the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire House and built what became the Paul Garber Facility of the National Air (later, National Air and Space) Museum, I graduated from Suitland High School in 1957, the last year in America in which schools were legally segregated. The day after, I enlisted in the Air Force. Until then, I had never spoken with, or been acquainted with, an African-American (at the time, the term was Negro). The racial, ethnic, and economic mix of the community in and around Marlow Heights has changed dramatically since that time so long ago, but it remains a nice community of decent, working people. One of my high school classmates was Steny Hoyer. My recollection is that in 1957, I wanted to go politics and he wanted to be a writer. Steny made it to Capitol Hill while I served in the Air Force (1957-60), was an American diplomat (1964-89), and am an author of books, magazine articles and newspaper columns about the Air Force and military affairs. I write a weekly opinion column for Air Force Times newspaper. My latest book is "Chopper," a history of American helicopter pilots and crews in combat. I have been interested in the Air Force all my life, so I'm glad the keeper of this site is an airman. I would be interested to hear from anyone. I'm also available to speak to groups. I'm providing my phone number. Robert F. Dorr (Bob) 3411 Valewood Drive Oakton VA 22124 (703) 264-8950 robert.f.dorr@cox.net

I hope I won't be excluded from this interesting site because my memories pre-date the 1960s. In 1948 when I was nine, my parents moved to 2502 Gaither Street in Hillcrest Heights. Our mailing address was "Washington 20, D. C." in those days before ZIP codes (which arrived in 1963), even though we were in Maryland. "My" house has been re-numbered and is 2503 Gaither Street today. At that time, the term Hillcrest applied to an area of Washington on the border near us while Suitland was quite some distance away. We were in Hillcrest Heights and adjacent to Silver Hill. Shortly after we moved in, the apartments nearby and the Iverson Mall were built. I was glad this site reminded me of the G. C . Murphy's store, although my memory is that it was a few doors away from the drug store. I have vivid memories of a hobby shop at one end of the shopping center. (to be continued)

Great stores and fantastic buys in the shopping center of those Era's. Back then we had salespeople asking, "may I help you" Boy oh boy, how times change for the worst. I went in a shopping mall the other day and had to look over 15 minutes just to ask a question of a sales person. Therefore, please bring back the past.

Link from Examiner. It is interesting that the Examiner would write about the Marlow Heights area since that area seems to be redlined by the Examiner and copies of the paper are usually difficult to find.

John the intersection with 24th Ave was Catskill, spent many a hour on that corner with MW's sister's. The corner of 25th Place and Catskill was our number one spot. I delivered the Washington Daily News for about 5 years in the area all around 24th, 25th 26th, Dawson, Catskill, Berkley, Easton and Eliot. I rode a bike everywhere in about a five mile radius of that area with no fear, alot different today. Great webpage I have been checking it out since the beginning, thought it was about time to sign the guestbook.

This is a wonderful site. Im trying to find some pictures to share, I hope that all of us can send in a favorite. This has been a wonderful walk down memory lane. I think the one thing we all seem to be commenting on is how we remember being able to walk so many places or play outside freely. I grew up on Akron street and went to Holy Family until 6th grade and then Stoddert and Potomac. I remember when they tore down the footbridge and built apartments behind the our houses. I remember Vacation Bible school at Temple Hills Baptist, I think every kid on Akron and Beaumont went there. Remember collecting bottle to return at 7-11 so that we could go over to Red Barn. Remember the duck pin bowling leagues at the bowling alley. I remember when alot of the families moved away. We stayed on Akron until 81 and then I joined the Marine Corps right after high school. I cant wait to see more added to this site. Thank you and sorry for being long winded!

I seemed to have as many friends in Marlow Heights as I did in the “Heights”. The Catholic school thing contributed to that mostly. Names like, O’Neil, Stevens, Long, Harrell, Hessler, Hoffman, Dahl, Pohl, …. I know many former Heights residents that migrated no further than Southern Maryland – Waldorf, Calvert County. I left the Heights and moved to Laurel, MD till ’95. Then I moved to Hammond, LA – 60 minutes north of Nawlins’. This website is a nice idea. It kinda jogs the memory. ED

I lived in the Marlow Heights area, Oxon Hill, Temple Hills and Clinton from the time I was discharged from the Air Force in 1964. Worked for the Library of Congress for 33 years. Retired to Lake Monticello in Central VA in 1997. I do miss the Mighty Mos, Hot Shoppes Juniors, and the Steak in a sack. I have learned on your websight that the Steak in a Sack in still open. Will have to visit them next time I am in the area. I am about 125 miles from Marlow Heights. I want to compliment you on a wonderful websight that brings back many memories. How about Saturday nights and the Oxon Hill firehouse in the 60's
