I grow up in Marlow Overlook. I was 15 then and graduated at OHHS 1965. Its ashame you really cant visit your place of childhood memories. Hung out at the bowling alley and DeMoreland's Ice Cream. Some of my friends still remain in Maryland area but moved down toward Mechanicsville. It was good times back then. Can still remember the day JFK got shot and the Cuba crisis. I think alot of us really loved JFK and definitely got scared about the Cuban Missiles.

Lived in Suitland at Hickory Hills apartments. Graduated in 1971. My brother Steve went to Benjamin Stoddert 1968 - 1971. We were collegiates back then but most of our friends were blocks. My dad had a 69 Z/28 and we hung out at Dynamotion and Budd's Creek all the time so the blocks thought we were ok for long hairs. I remember street racing on 301 and Pennsylvania Ave. I remember they raced one day at school on the road by the girls Catholic school next to Suitland Senior High. Went to Iverson Mall all the time, Jr. Hot Shoppes all the time. A wrestler from Bishop High broke my nose outside the Hot Shoppes across from Andrews AFB one night when his girlfriend kissed me. Way to much to remember, but your site has really got me thinking of all the great times we had. We went back in 1997 and spent the day, was a big mistake. Nothing is the same, it is true what they say, you can never go back. This site is great.

Just found the site. I got kinda moody after I was looking through some old slides. Found someone that I knew when I was around 15/16. (born 1946--I'm old.) Did a google search for her name and found that she had died in 1992. Just wanted to send her the picture. We weren't close and we never communicated, she went to surrattsville and I went to Suitland, and the world keeps going around. ---anyway-- this is a fun site and didn't mean to bring it down..

A great place to grow up. Nice, hard working middle class people with few pretensions but good outlooks. The schools were very good. Shipped off to Surrattsville since Suitland was overcrowded and Parkland was not ready. Best thing that happened to me as a kid. Great school. Fine people. We still get together each year. I loved being able to find a buddy to play with every day after school, no matter what the sport. Steet football was best. The pizza from the Pizza Pan seemed exotic at the time. Square. Silver Hill Boys Club and walking in practice gear down to the park to practice. I wonder if anyone walks that far any more just to practice for kiddy sports??? Duckpin bowling. Sitting at the counter in the Rexall drug store or Murphy's and ordering a chocolate coke. The smell of popcorn in Murphy's. Mrs. Foster's 6th grade class. A first class band at Stoddard, winning top prizes at State. Marge Alvaro. John Bywaters. I have lived many places in the US and Europe. I still love calling Hillcrest Hghts. home. I know it is run down now, but bet the kids who live there think of it the way we did. And the best fast food burger ever was the Royalburger at Hot Shoppes Jr. Sat in my 1950 metallic blue Ford (with fender skirts), girlfriend in my lap, and munched french fries. Sounds like a Seeger song. Maybe it was. Thanks for this site.

My Mother,Sister and I did alot of shopping at the Hecht Company in Marlow Heights Shopping Center. I have been to several Hecht's stores since -- none are the same as the old Marlow Heights store. That store was quite unique. It even had a candy department! I have not been to the Marlow Heights store since 1973. I've often though of going back one day, but I really don't want to be disapointed. I'm sure it won't be the same as I remember!

Please delete my old entry. Back in the good old days my best friends & I used to hang out at "Shoppes" & sometimes Red Barn. I was a tomboy when I was younger & used to play in the "tunnels" & play army in the "clay mountains" w/ the boys & of course always had to be the "Nurse", which made me mad, but the memories are good ones. I recently saw Chris Mascaro who lived across the street from us growing up on Oxon Run Court & am in touch with Vicki Finch, one of my best friends from Stoddard & Potomac. I remember Woolworth's & Peoples, before it became CVS. Homecoming in 1972, when I hid in my girfriens bedroom from a guy who wanted to take me, but I didn't want to go with him. Such memories. I graduated from Potomac in 1973 by the skin of my teeth, got good grades, but seemed to like the outside of Potomac better! Great site!! Keep it going...Pam

My sister and brothers (Karen, Rick and Roger) all grew up on Norcross Street. We are still in touch with many of our friends from the area. When my mom died in 2001, by the paper or word of mouth, alot of people we had not seen in ages came to the funeral home. It was wonderful to see these people and for them to show up and pay their respects. Back in the day we took the time to visit, now everyone has there own families, jobs, etc that keep them busy - too busy. Chuck, thanks for the memories.

This website is awesome. It brought back tons of memories of things I'd forgotten or hadn't thought about in years. I love seeing so many names I can recognize. I left for college early (1979) and never went back. I have always felt that everyone I ever knew in the area is long gone -- it's so reassuring that they're all out there somewhere and still remembering so many of the same things I do. Thanks for the wonderful work that makes this possible. I'm proud to share these memories.

Chuck, Way cool web site! Thanks for doing the work to remember our generation’s version of American Graffiti. I’m going to forward this to all my family. I’ve tried to explain to my children what it meant to be a part of that small “corner of time and the world – whatever it meant”. No easy job in the fast paced and ordered world we live in today. While not everything was good, in those days, there was so much that was great. I remember feeling what it meant to be free, not in a political sense, but in a creative and social way. That sense of community and belonging led to the adventurous nature of so many paths I took in life. The idealism, of that time, was contrary to the political correctness that replaced it, without malice. Whatever danger existed also gave way to expressionism and art. I remember feeling as though I could do anything. I wish my kids could feel that today. In life, we must take the bad with the good and in looking back at our Marlow Heights, in the 60’s and 70’s, I choose to take the good from the bad. Thanks again, Chuck. It was great to meet you in cyberspace realm of Marlow Heights circa 1970. Larry Norris

This was the best place to live in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Life was really a solid community from school, church, boy scouts, and boys club. I remember playing baseball with my new neighborhood friends while DC burned in the 60's. How life changed in the 70's with high school, getting married, and two great sons. I had so many memories in the 70's from Giovanni's, Some Place Else, Dallas Kitchen, Oscars, and visiting friends on 28th pkwy. I spent many a days on the black path with John Bridgers and Steve Eastwood watching over Green Valley school. Concerts at the Cap center was a truely a great event. So many great concerts. One special moment was waiting for Hecht's to open to purchase Zeplin tickets. Friends and long hair was the norm "back in the day". This is a great site and I hope all my friends and their friends call reflect on this great web site. God bless everybody who grew up in this area during this time period. I am lucky to have found a continued family lifestyle in the Deep Creek/Western Maryland area. Cheers, as I raise a Crown Royal toast to everyone!!!

Trying again to get this right. This web site stands as a shrine to all of us who grew up there wondering if the U.S. was going to stay intact. Watching the capital burn from our 23rd Pkwy house on April 5-7th, convinced justice did not prevail as our torn nation promised, then they shot Bobby and when that hit home we all watched the Chicago Democratic convention on the tube and guessed Mayor Daleys cops were really pigs. Bottom line. We survived. I ended up moving to MN and freaked for 2 years on a country farm, played in numerous Bands singing and druming, paid for my excesses and sought 3 treatments in 10 years , finally sober for15 and have 2 great college kids and a wonderful wife. Bless all of you. I miss many, many of you all and wish you the best, We are survivors.

I remember seeing movies at the Marlow Heights theater. We did a lot of shopping at Dart Drug, Woolworths, Toys R Us and Montgomery Ward. I bought most of my records in Iverson Mall. I spent a lot of time and quarters at the video arcade there. I bowled with the Silver Hill Boys club at the Fair Lanes. My fondest memories of Marlow Heights, however, will always be my time with my best friend from High School, Sandi Gurkin.

I predate most of you here. I graduated from Suitland Sr High in 1963. I did find it enjoyable to read the Guest Book. I left the area in 1967 after college and did not return until July 2005. My what a change. It really is a shame to see that my old haunts, friends houses, and neighborhood had turned into a third world slum. I'll remember the good days thank you. Thanks for all the pictures.

Some of the names I knew from the area...Paula Cuffaro, Steve Castellano, Mike Shanahan, Jimmy Gray, Roger Howard, Tom Arnold, Claude Davis, Bill Cave...had some great parties...Jim Cherowitzo, Herbie Dehart, Ted Harris, Ray Pegg, Lorie Olson, I had a great time growing up there off of Calloway Street in Hillcrest Apts. I could write a book about some of the things that happened. The fire in our apt. The fights I had. The time my Buddy ran over my me and my sisters bike with his car...just my arm actually. The time we tied our buddy up to a tele.pole and put ketchup on his t-shirt. It was night and he pretented he was dead. Scared the hell out of an old couple that drove by real slow. The short time I worked at Marlow Theatre. I quit after the 50th running of the Poseidon Adventure. It goes on and on...
