Comment:
I remember bradbury heights boys club ,and the long walk to woodly knools elem school before shadyside elem was built.I remember the great sleding in winter at rosecroft race way or james bond movies at the marlow theaters.I also remember how great it was to see usually 3 movies at the drive in movies and how we would play at the playgound in front of the screen before the movie started.I also remember as a kid you were either a grit, block ,continental or jock, banlon shirts, chuck taylor tennis shoes,or macs and peters jackets with your name sewn on the front(cool).....I remember graduating from surrattsville in 74 with hair down the middle of my back and not a clue.Seems like a life time ago.....

What a great web site. I went to FS Key Jr High, moving to Hillside, Md (Marlboro Gardens)at age 14. My mother and I moved here from Charleston, S.C. after my father died. I didn't know anything about collegiates(sp?) or blocks when I moved here. But I soon found out that I was a collegiate. I started school in the middle of the school year, 9th grade. First day of school I was walking down the hall to a class to get my papers signed by a teacher, and some clown (block) called me a faggot, and said something about my mother. We wound up in a fight and were taken to the office. The principal and administration labeled me as a troublemaker because I got into a fight on my first day here. Word got around that day that there was a collegiate fighting back (most were too scared to fight). I walked out the front door of school that day and looked up on the hill. There were about 25 or 30 kids, and they all turned and looked at me when I walked out. The crowd parted, and in the middle was another clown that accused me of saying something about his mother. Well needless to say, every block in the school wanted to pick a fight with me. I'd say I got into about 15 or 20 during the last half of the 9th grade. Me and mom moved to Oakcrest Gardens the next year and I attended Central HS. Everything changed in the 10th grade. I found more kindred spirits in HS. Got my first job at Hot Shoppes Cafeteria at 14. Worked at Sam's Car Wash, Scott gas station on St. Barnabas Rd, and the 7-11 on Marlbor Pike. After HS went to PGCC. Got into the student government. Wound up managing a band called Kriss Kross, which featured Gregg Wright (play lead guitar on the Michael Jackson Victory tour) on lead guitar, Jimmy Barnett on bass, and Jimmy Nigera on drums. Started promoting concerts at PGCC, Marlow Heights Rec Center, local clubs, etc. Worked for Concept Entertainment in the early 70s. We promoted all the shows at the Baltimore Civic Center, and a few shows at the Capital Center the first year it opened. Didn't mean for this to turn into an autobiography. Just was looking to throw in my 2 cents worth about collegiates and blocks. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers me from back in the days.... Thanks for the web site, and the opportunity to share a few memories...

I did not grow up in Marlow Heights but moved there from Anacostia in 1971 with my son. I have very fond memories of the area, as we lived in what was then called Marlow Overlook. A beautiful 2 bedroom apt. which we loved. We shopped in Marlow Heights every week and enjoyed walking, shopping and eating in Iverson Mall. It was safe back then, and we could feel secure in walking back home late in the evening without fear of being mugged, robbed, or worse, shot at. We loved eating at the Hot Shoppes cafeteria and my son loved going in the Hobby Shop, and Spencers in the mall. We shopped at Dart Drug Store, Safeway, and just generally enjoyed everything about it. It's very sad that times have changed and people have changed it. I often long for the good old days.

Reply to George's entry. Mr. Wicks is gone leveled parking lot now, Bowling Alley gone Metro Subway stop and parking lot, Qunset Hut still there still open as a nightclub packs them in, not the kind of club many of us from 60's and 70's would proably hang out at. I also delivered the Post Southview Apts and Forrest Hills along Southern Ave. Also helped my brother deliver the Post along 28th Pkwy and 27th Ave, and also helped a carrier deliver Carriage Hill Apts on Curtis Dr. on Sundays. I also hung out at 7-11 on Curtis Dr. with someone who worked there George K.. Im sure our paths crossed, spent alot of time on Afton, 31th, 28th Pwky and Bellbrook. I know your enjoying Hilton Head, I enjoy Mrtyle Beach each fall.

I was blown away by this site. Rick Arcusa sent it to me a couple days ago. Among a ton of other amazing stuff, I ran across an old Silver Hill Boy's Club basketball team picture -- that included my brother! Technically, I actually lived in Hillcrest Heights -- 2008 Gaither Street. Our back yard abutted the Shugart Jr. High athletic feild. We lived there from 1964 (I think) to 1976 when my Dad moved us to Virginia. Once in Virginia, however, it took years to wean myself from commuting back and forth over the WW bridge. Thanks a bunch for the site and the memories! -Steve

This is one terrific site. I'm so glad you made it. It takes me back to such a happy time in my life when things were a lot simpler, school was fun, most of the kids were nice, and playing outside was the norm. I lived on 28th Pkwy and my fondest memories are of walking up to Iverson to go to the Carnivals in the summer, and walking to the Marlow Heights Theater for movies like "Escape From Witch Mountain." The Red Barn thing just blew me away. Thanks so much for doing this.

It's nice to see so many familiar names from the past that share so many of the same memories. It really was a great time and a great place to grow up. My wife can't believe I have so many memories from my youth. Going to Silver Hill baseball practice, soccer practice as a young boy. Doing things that teenagers do (like buying beer at Myers Liquor Store wearing my lettermen's jacket) what fools we were!! And still alive to tell about it. I can remember both my parents being alive and healthy. What a wonderful time of my life. Thanks to anyone of you that I knew back then. You made my youth in Marlow Heights / Hillcrest Heights alot of fun!! Rick Arcusa

This site brought back alot of memories. I remember walking to and from school at Sandy Mount. I used to walk to the gym up 27th Parkway to train. Riding my bike all over Marlow Heights. Who can forget cutting through the woods behind Stoddert -- a little scary at night. I remember being bused to Green Valley -- half of my friends got to stay at Sandy Mount. Memories of Fairlanes, Red Barn, Dallas Kitchen (pizza), 7-11 (hot chocolate, big buddy gum and slurpees), Arby's, Hot Shoppe Cafeteria (I worked there in 1976-77) I still remember the names of alot of my old friends: Jimmy Stewart (lived in overlook), Jimmy Calis, Jimmy Ware (lived acros from me), Kenny Davis, Nick Berry (overlook), the Fetheralls (overlook), Mike James (overlook)(passed away), Steven Cook, Johnny Meadows (Smokey), Darin & Anthony Pasquale (overlook), Eddie Stevens, Elias (skeeter) Cato (overlook) (played baseball with him), Debbie Saroka (sp?), Linda Fortunato, Sherry Frey, Lorraine Oleski, Mike Sebenaler. My brother Sam's friends would come around -- Jerry Schultze (sp?) Wessellman. I remember when playing football no one wanted to go up against Paul Gray -- he was huge & fast, also could be a bully :). I had great times meeting up with some of my friends from the area in the early 80's -- I'd hang out with Mike Sebenaler, Steve Giovinazzo and a few more. There's alot more I could mention but maybe later. Email me if you have memories to share. Thanks for the great site Chuck!

Although I only spent about 3 years of my life in this area, I have some very fond memories of Marlow Heights, Suitland, Silver Hill, Camp Springs and Forestville. My earliest memory of Francis Scott Key Jr. High is in 1972/1973 and my girlfriend Lee Marquette and my "groupies" Tammy Hardesty and Phyllis Jackson. If not for those 3 ladies I wouldn't have even gone to school back then. Thanks to Google, Tammy found me and afterward she found Lee after 34 years of searching. Where are YOU Phyllis? Iverson Mall was a great place back then. One of the first malls I'd ever seen. Far East Bizarre was a "head shop" on the lower level where my girlfriend Cathy Smith worked. Woodward and Lothrop was a frequent "discount" store, Orange Julius was cheap and Montgomery Wards was where I worked in automotive department changing tires. LOL....the upper parking deck? What a make out spot THAT was! Cops never came around, there were no cameras or security guards back then and when not making out with girls I used to go up there and do vehicular doughnuts in the snow in my 1971 Pinto to my hearts content! Highs, Red Barn, Jiffy Sub Shop, Penn Mar Shopping Center, carnivals at the Census Bureau parking lot, Shakey's Pizza, being able to walk anywhere at any time with out fear all seems like a different world now. I guess it was. Carjacking? Back then, that's what you did when your car had a flat and Crack was an unsavory visual when the plumber was at your house. From what I hear, due to the criminal element, that whole area now is an unpleasant place to be. I'm so glad I lived, worked and went to school there then. Some of my best memories are from that time and place.

I've been waiting to sign the guest book, hoping I can think of just the right words to express what a great time it was in the early 60s and 70s growing up in Hillcrest and running around the streets of Marlow Heights, oh yeah, and beyond...to the Might Mo on Penn Ave. I had sooo many girlfriends back then! And we ALL had the same thing in mind. Yep, that's right. Having fun! (Hello Diane!) (Hello Pam!) (Hello Greg!) My friends who signed the guest book already. OK, where's everyone else from the Court down by Oxon Run? And Iverson Street? Just a couple of comments I think worth mentioning, from my young years... Remember the field next to Pizza Pan that was covered with broken bits of glass? I often wondered why and how all that glass got there. I walked over it once barefooted, without cutting my feet. Remember when everyone went outside to look at the "flying saucer?" It was a weather balloon it turned out. Remember the band practice in front of the Nightsy's place? I think I got that right...my childhood friend, Diane H., has an older brother, John, who was in the band and played guitar and sang. Remember the dances at the rec center behind Hecht's? And teen club at Stoddart, where I tried to do the "Robot." I did do it pretty well, "Bunny" said, but that was the only cool dance that I could do, then. Remember Giovanni's. Diane H and I used to fling the doors open and yell, "Ya bunch of drunks!" We were like 9 years old. And, we'd call there and ask for Red Pepper. (Who? Red Pepper?) Yeah, ain't that hot?! I'll run out of room here if I start commenting on my teen years, but wasn't it fun all of the people everywhere there and then? Oh yeah, remember when you could dial 555 on your telephone and anyone else who was on that line could hear everyone else? But you had to yell.

Nice photo of the shopping center sign. Just like the good old days, not all of the letters worked! My first job was at the Hot Shoppes Cafeteria in Marlow Heights SS - dishwasher. I graduated to busboy the next summer. Our baseball team from Temple Hills used to play against one of the Silver Hill teams at the field next to Stoddert Jr High. Remember Don Mesinese? Drafted by the Pitsburg Pirates. Don't think he played long though. He hit me up side the head with a pitch - luckily only stunned. I remember massive crowds at the Jr Hot Shoppes after football and basketball games in 67 and 68. And Prince Georges County's finest rousting people who had finished their Royal Burgers and tried to sit in the restaurant or in the parking lot and talk. Wish I could have made it to the Mighty Mo convention. I think my brother went. He told me about your site. Great music from PGC and WEAM too. Thanks for putting this together!

This is a great site. There are so many memories here. The pictures just really take me back to stuff I haven't thought of in years. My daughter just started high school this year. A different world than ours. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. I have lived a few places up and down the east coast finally setting in NC. Haven't been up there in forever but thanks to technology have kept in touch with a few friends from the area. I think the site will spur me to take a road trip to show my daughter and husband where I grew up. Thanks for all of your hard work Chuck. Youv'e helped so many of us connect with our past.

Great site Chuck! I played in the Nowhere Men and The Kings Men. The NM played at The Quonset Inn at Silver Hill. Man, that was a long time ago. They had go-go dancers!! We played the CYO parish circuit too. That was a lot of fun. Lawrence and the Arabians, The New Breed and the Impalas, Phil Flowers, The Cherry People, WOW! Does anyone remember the Lafayette Radio Electronics store on East West Highway? That was way before BestBuy and Circuit City. Their stereo amps and Criterion speakers were the best.

I still love Prince George's County and I will always cherish in my heart the good memories of the county. Marlow Heights to me is a special area, when driving away from the Washington, D.C. on Branch Avenue, especially at night you can't help but see that huge sign that illuminates at night Marlow Heights Shopping Center. The shopping center in its glory days is tied with the once proud Iverson Mall in which I have remember being finish back in the late 60s. But coming up as a child I remember Eastover Shopping Center was the hit of the area in Prince George's County along with Marshall Hall up 210 (Indian Head Highway). Those areas are as old as Griffith Stadium of the old Washington Senators. I remember and have alot of history in the area and I can go on and on. But that is all I have to say, and we have to keep in touch. Take care, Michael Samuels

Having fun with my sisters and my best friend Brenda Sweeney and her family! Also, our friends (Margie & Sheila) plus many others (they know who they are!) from Jr. Hot Shoppes, Drug Fair, The Mighty Mo, Marlow Heights Shopping Center & Carnival, Iverson Mall, Hillcrest Heights Shopping Center, and Watching Drag Racing. I remember meeting my husband at Jr. Hot Shoppes (thanks to Brenda.) Just hanging around Iverson Mall. Stopping by and seeing my Mom who worked at Hecht's and then Woodies. I would have been with the class of '73 from Potomac, but left before that happened. I didn't let that stop me, got my GED then went to college. (I received an A.A. Degree from Montgomery College.) Thanks Chuck for this great site!
