I was googling for a phone number for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company that had a district office in Marlow Heights and saw that someone mentioned they used to work there (but couldn't find then entry after getting on the page). Does anyone know if it's still in business or how to get hold of the company. I'm cleaning out my Dad's house and found that he had a life insurance policy from Home Beneficial but I don't have a way to get in touch with them to see if it's still valid. If anyone has any info, it will be appreciated (my e-mail is denisejhurd@gmail.com). My great aunt, Helen Garden, lived in Temple Hills from the mid-60's until her passing in 2008.

Graduated from Bowie HS 1968. BHS opened in 1967, so the class of 67 had been to Duvall HS in 66. We had a lot of blocks, and collegiates... but not too many mods. Hippies were about to break wide open. I was one.

I grew up in Oxon Run Hillcrest Heights and Marlow Heights the memories of those times are as if they happen yesterday hanging out with friends at the rec center or drug fair or the Iverson mall or where ever you happen to be at the time there was always something to do like pigging out at Steaknsack or Jr Hot Shoppes or going to the shopping center carnival each year or checking out the side walk sales in the spring it was always some thing different the friends you would get to know during the school years at Stoddert jr high and aer still friends with to this day though we have lost some over the years this is what I remember about Marlow Heights and it will stay with me always.

Great web site. Thank you for doing this. I have spent a lot of time looking at it. Wanted to let people know that Tom McBride who loivedinMarlow Heights fromabout 1962 through 1998 passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 22, 2015. I am handling his affairs. Many may remember Tom as a very good basketball player at John Carroll HS and on the Courts in Marlow Heights for many years. my father was the owner/ operator of Branch Auto Electric, near the old gem store. Age has taken its toll along with some memories, we have been trying to come up with the name of the old hotel/motel that was where the new wendys is, and in front of Speedy auto parts. It used to have large lions outside and hosted many bands. any idea? thanx

I loved spending Saturdays walking from my house on 27th Avenue to Iverson Mall and Marlow Heights shopping center. I attended Wendy Ward charm school and sold GS cookies outside of Roy Rogers in the mall. I learned to sew at the Singer store and bought all of my Girl Scout stuff at Hecht's. I loved walking through the 5 & dime--it was a great variety store. I used to make my father take me there every Tuesday so that I could get the latest lyric sheet from 98 Radio. Let's not even get started on the record stores!

My family and some extended family lived in walking distance to our house so it was great that we could walk to see them, there were some we had to drive to and we did at least every other weekend.

Living in Capitol Heights and going to these schools were the best years of my life !!!
Comment:
I was born in Oakland, California -- the daughter of a Capitol Heights boy and an Oakland girl. He was a soldier and she was a High School girl. They both worked in the cannery, met and fell in love. When I was one year old, Daddy received his Honorable Discharge out of the service (after serving in BOTH the Navy and Army)and he, my mama and I returned to Daddy's home in Capitol Heights. I grew up on the same street he was born on (61st Avenue) in the ONLY "PINK" house in "the Heights". We lived on the corner of "H"Street hill and 61st Avenue. I grew up knowing ALL my wonderful extended family, neighbors and all the kids around. We played together, went to school together, went to church together and even got in trouble together (he,he,he). We would stay outside till dark playing on the hills and in the woods riding bikes, catching frogs and tadpoles and just hanging around together. We would stay outside in the rain in the summertime and slide down the hills of clay on our butts; we would sleigh-ride down the "H" St hill during the snows (at night our parents would take over the hill, build a fire in a 55 gal drum at the top of the hill and sleigh away) whenever it snowed the police would always block-off the traffic from getting on the H St hill !! This was really great....The friendships we forged back then were so deep and lasting that some of us "kids" are still close (even if it has taken years to reconnect)and it is as if we've NEVER been apart !!! Amazing !!!

Iverson Mall and the deli that was in there. I went to the orthodontist in the Mall and afterwards I would walk into the deli just for the great smells. This was about 1970 or so.
Comment:
I lived in Oxon Hill from 1959 to 1978. I used to walk to Apple Grove elementary school, but back then it wasn't called "free range parenting" back then. It was called, "Get to school". I lived off of Bock Rd and I could hear the announcer from Rosecroft Raceway and the cheer of the crowd as the race neared the end. The sound would bounce off the house next door and into my bedroom window. There were times that I would walk (by myself) to Rosecroft and pet the horses. Of course I had to get over Henson creek by jumping from log to rock to log. I had a friend who's father owned the pizzeria off St. Barnabas Rd, tho I can't remember it's name. We used to hang out there quit a bit. I worked there for two weeks before Oxon Hill Rec. center (off of Tucker Rd) opened. I was a lifeguard there, then Asst. manager. Everyone always showed up for their shifts, did their jobs and never caused problems. It's not that way today. I know, 'cause I managed a pool (as a retirement gig) a year ago. It was a good time. Kids played outside, unsupervised, and we were held accountable for our actions and no one would sue a neighbor if their kid got hurt while playing. (sigh)

My parents lived in Glassmanor (first group of tenants there) then moved to a new house in 1953 near St. Barnabas Road and Wheeler Road when I was born. When my sister was born in 1956, we moved to a new house in Hillcrest Heights, which was then being built. Having pictures of all 3 places when they were built and comparing them to now is interesting. I remember going to the McDonalds on Indian Head Highway near Easter when it said 'over 500,000 sold' . It was the only one in the DC area. Used to love playing in Oxen Run Creek in the park near Naylor Road and Oxen Run Parkway. It was great when I got old enough to bike to Marlow Heights on my own from our home near Oxen Run Parkway (just inside the DC/Maryland line on the Maryland side. (We had DC addresses then, even though we lived in Maryland). Marlow Heights then was the 'end of the earth' However, Fleishman's Market on Old Silver Hill Road and been there way before Marlow Heights Shopping Center. I was there for its grand opening. And then later when Hecht's was added. The severely eroded area off of 28th Parkway where it goes from divided to a two lane road was a favorite spot for us to play Cops and Robbers, etc. All gone now. This was way before Iverson Mall. A Howard Johnson's near Branch ave and Naylor (behind Stricks Liquor) was our 'regular restaurant' Of course, as kids, we would all be on our bikes and watch the people go into Mr. Wick's Motel on Oxen Run and make snide comments. And the Quonset Hut patrons were ... well..... not the highest social caliber. I was in the second class to enter Holy Family Elementary. When my sister was baptized there was;'t even a church yet, (1956) and we met in a quonset hut behind Hillcrest Height Shopping Center. It later became a bowling alley. I believe it is still there but I don't know what it is used for. Have lived in the DC area all my life. Since the 1970s in DC itself. Only know1 person still living in Hillcrest Heights from when I lived there.

We moved to Hillcrest Heights in 1966, but I was born in Philadelphia. It was a big change for us, but we made friends fast and ended up loving Maryland. My brother and I both went to Holy Family and then he went to Potomac and I went to LaReine. We lived on the corner of Foster Place and 23rd Parkway and I can still remember sitting in front of my neighbor's house and watching the cars. I ended up staying in Maryland until the early 80's, but the rest of my family moved back to Philadelphia and New Jersey. I lived in the apartments behind the Hillcrest Heights shopping center for a while (can't remember the name) and then moved to Temple Hills. I still stay in touch with a lot of people that I went to grade and high school with. I know the area has changed a lot, but I have great memories. Even though I was born in PA, I consider myself a Maryland girl ;)! I live in NJ now (ugh), but I certainly don't plan on staying here for the rest of my life. Oh, Fischer is my ex married name. When I was in Maryland I was Joani Ciaccia and my brother was Jimmy.

Hi Chuck and Happy New Year! Thank you for creating and maintaining the Marlow Heights 60s and 70s site and for continuing to promote all that it has become. This has enabled so many of us to embrace so many wonderful memories that otherwise could have easily disappeared through life. It has also given so many the opportunity to re-connect after 30-50 years. Without you, none of this would have ever happened for so many people like myself. How fortunate we all are to 'keep the memories alive' while creating 'new memories' while we can re-gain tight friendships in adulthood(still a scarey word)! It was such a special time of life for us all. To keep that feeling 'alive' with great memories of when we all lived in an awesome place and time called childhood/teen years is absolutely priceless. Thank You Very Much, Roger

In late 2004, while living in Palm Bay, Florida, I was getting homesick for the DC area in general, and was finding myself reminiscing more and more about growing up in Marlow Heights of the 60s and 70s. I saw an ad for web site hosting and thought, hmmm, I've been an IT guy for quite a few years, I can probably create my own web site. After all, NO ONE would think of creating a web site about Marlow Heights during the 60s and 70s, right? So after acquiring some old photos and entering information about the area from memory, Marlow Heights 60s and 70s was launched officially on January 1, 2005. The site soon found a niche with Baby Boomers who grew up in not only Marlow Heights, but the nearby communities of Hillcrest Heights, Temple Hills, Suitland, Oxon Hill, District Heights, Camp Springs, Capitol Heights, and Morningside. The site received the attention of people not specifically from those communities; in late 2005 a DC newspaper did a feature article on the Marlow Heights 60s and 70s web site. As the web site grew, more and more web site followers began requesting an in person get together of people who grew up in Marlow Heights and the vicinity, of the 60s and 70s. However, no one could agree where to meet. In March 2008, while having lunch at the old Steak in a Sack (a Marlow Heights institution since 1962, owned, and still owned, by the Khalid family) to celebrate my birthday, the idea just came to me to have get togethers there at Steak in a Sack. After all, it was one of the few places in or around Marlow Heights that was one, still open, and two, a place that just about everyone from the area remembered and could identify with. So on March 29, 2008, I hosted our first ever get together at Steak in a Sack. While we didn't have a huge turnout (perhaps a total of 10 people showed up), we not only enjoyed the get together at Steak in a Sack, but were also able to visit the old Sandymount Elementary, Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High, Potomac Senior High, Hillcrest Heights Elementary, Green Valley Elementary, Panorama Elementary, G. Gardner Shugart Jr. High, and Overlook Elementary. That lead to these Steak in a Sack get togethers becoming regular occurrences during the year; a total of four are held each year. The first one each year is always held on the last Saturday in March, to commemorate the first ever get together in March 2008. Another get together is next held in May or June, one in August or September, and the last one of the year is usually the first or second week of December. On March 27, 2010, we held our largest gathering at Steak in a Sack ever, and since then, with a total of approximately 60 people jam packed into the restaurant. There was also a local newspaper reporter and their photographer on hand, in what became the second newspaper article written on the web site. Up 'til now, I have hosted almost 30 of these get togethers at Steak in a Sack, and they have become a tradition. Former Sandymount, Stoddert, and Potomac classmate Billie Martin has every single get together at Steak in a Sack. You just never know who you'll see at Steak in a Sack. Even people who were initially skeptical about coming to Marlow Heights, in fact, paranoid (Come to Marlow Heights? Oh, no way I'm coming back to the 'hood!) have pushed those unfounded fears aside and come out to enjoy a nice nostalgic visit. 2009 saw two articles published in the Washington Post related to my web site, back to back. The first article was about Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High's, "Peppermint Pipers", a phenomenal performance group that existed for two years during the late 60s. The second article appeared the next day, and was about my web site itself. October 2009 saw another first for the web site--the inaugural, "Marlow Heights 60s and 70s Back to School Dance", held at the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach, attended by approximately 300 people. The success of this dance convinced me that there was a desire by many people who grew up in PG County during the 60s and 70s to have a dance once a year, to see others who grew up during the same time period, in the same or similar communities. Since then that's exactly what I have done. Beginning with 2015's dance (October 3, at the Upper Marlboro Moose Lodge), it has been renamed the, "PG County 60s and 70s Back to School Dance", recognizing the web site's broader appeal beyond just Marlow Heights and the immediate area. Finally, 2009 also saw the first school tour, beyond impromptu visits to Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High and Sandymount Elementary, in which an employee of Potomac took a group of us on a tour of the school. Go Braves! With all the web site related get togethers, many, many people have been able to reconnect with lots of old friends and former classmates. I have also seen myself: my 5th Grade teacher from Sandymount Elementary, Ms. Doyle; my 8th Grade English teacher from Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High, Mrs. Marshall; former Principal from Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High, Mr. Moran; and former Potomac Senior High Vice Principal and later Principal, Suitland Senior High, Mr. Suhr. People have asked me more than a couple of times, why the abiding devotion to my Marlow Heights web site, the Steak in a Sack get togethers, the dances? Surely it involves a lot of time, expense, and effort. Well, yes it does. But when I see someone who recognizes an old friend, classmate, or teacher at one of my web site related events, and I know they have not seen one another in many years, I feel an extreme sense of joy and satisfaction knowing that I had a hand in bringing so many back together again. So what does the future hold as Marlow Heights 60s and 70s embarks on its next 10 years? Well, the web site itself will be redesigned again this year, to make it more compliant with current web technologies, more interactive for visitors, and to include a great deal more content for everyone to see. For example, I plan to put up more than 20 school yearbooks that I had professionally scanned into digital files, so that everyone could see them for free. People should be able to leave comments on the web site itself, as well as linking to social networks, such as Facebook. Beyond that? Well, in a web site that has continually produced many firsts, I guarantee you that I've got more up my sleeve, so stay tuned! The Marlow Heights 60s and 70s web site has always been free, and will remain free. I've always strived to provide a place for people to travel back down Memory Lane of those PG County 60s and 70s neighborhoods, schools, hangouts, etc. Remember, "Keep the Memories Alive!"

I was a young police officer in 1969 in Hampton Virginia and remember Casey Chevrolet commercials featuring Susan Gailey. When I returned to the area flying for the Navy in 73 I think she was still doing commercials. She was a treat and a great on screen sales girl. Thanks, Ms Gailey. 🙂

Started in Highcrest in 1st grade. Moved from 24th Ave. to 29th Place and attended Sandy Mount in 6th grade. My first job was at Jr. Hot Shoppes. The parking lot had as many stoned people as Dupont Circle. They would get the munchies and buy a lot of food. Won an internal contest for selling the most chicken dinners and ended up getting hired by a manager from a store inside the mall. He liked the way I sold those chicken dinners! Left after graduating in 1970. My parents actually moved to Rockville in the middle of my senior year. I drove the beltway every day so I could graduate from Potomac. I was the President of the Student Council at Stoddert, VP of the Class of '70 and a cheerleader. Basically, I joined everything I could to get out of classes legally. Most of the teachers were sub par and the quality of our education was poor. It was a great place to grow up. Lots and lots of kids our age. Too bad we didn't have more academic resources. Graduated from the U of MD. Worked 2 jobs during the school years and a ton of hours over the summer. Graduated with a job! Worked for CBS Records during college covering MD, Georgetown, GW and American's radio, newspapers and concert boards. CBS gave me a shot and moved me to CT and then NYC. I've had my own business for 20 years. Advertising, promotion, marketing and big venue events focused on diversity. Finding this site has been fun and I thank you for all you've done to get it up. When I have time, I'll dig up some old stuff I have in a suitcase. It will bring the '68 - '70 era in for those interested in our space and time at Potomac. Thanks again for this site and your efforts, Deby
