Marlow Heights 60s and 70s “Back to School” Dance Pictures!

I basically grew up in Marlow Heights, Maryland, starting from around 1965, until we moved away from the area in late 1973. I lived mainly in an area known as Deer Park Heights, which was off of Raleigh Road (Raleigh ran from Olson Street and St. Barnabus Road). I attended Sandymount Elementary School in Marlow Heights from 4th-6th Grade, attended Benjamin Stoddert Jr. High School, and one semester of Potomac Sr High School. Before that I lived in Dennis Grove and attended Valley View ES, then 28th Parkway and attended Green Valley ES. I also worked at the Red Barn (which we used to call the "Dead Barn" on St. Barnabas Road), as well as the Jr. Hot Shoppes at the Iverson Mall in Hillcrest Heights. I was also a Block aka Grit for a few years, before falling victim to bell bottoms/flares, butterfly collar shirts, “stack” shoes, and that “feathered” hairstyle of the 70s.

I decided to create this web site to connect with my Marlow Heights past, by sharing my recollections and photos, and hoping that others do the same. Didn’t you ever think about a toy you had as a kid, a restaurant you used to visit, a teacher you had in school, a boyfriend or girlfriend, the neighborhood you lived in, your first job as a teenager, fads, clothing styles, or a long lost friend from Marlow Heights? If you lived in Marlow Heights during the 60s and 70s, maybe we can bring back some of those memories, or you’ll connect with old friends and classmates. This is a participative web site, and whatever information, articles, links, or photos provided to me will be credited. I would also like to eventually have a message board.

If you’re wondering about the garish, gaudy colors on this web site, well, that’s how I remember the 60s and 70s!
