On March 29, 2008, approximately 12 to 13 people showed up at Steak in a Sack for our first local get together. A very good time was had by all, talking about the old neighborhoods, schools, Marlow Heights Shopping Center, and Iverson Mall. I also had the pleasure of seeing my 5th grade teacher from Sandymount Elementary, Ms. Doyle, who was nice enough to show up and join the group. Of course, most people chowed down on a classic Steak in a Sack sandwich, in this local landmark that has been around since 1962. You ought to check it out before it disappears, as others places have, such as Woodies and Jr. Hot Shoppes. Fear not, we plan to have regular, future get togethers as long as the demand is there. Watch for announcements in the site newsletter. After Steak in a Sack, most of the group walked the entire Marlow Heights Shopping Center. After that, we cruised through Iverson Mall, to some very curious stares from the regulars (“We’re baaaaack!”). Next we visited the following elementary schools: Sandymount, Overlook, Hillcrest Heights, Green Valley, Panorama, and Barnaby Manor. We then stopped by Stoddert and Shugart junior high schools, and finally Potomac Senior High. We also drove down St. Barnabas to the old Dennis Grove apartments, where I lived in ‘66 and ‘67.
