MARLOW HEIGHTS

On October 24, 2009 we had two events. One, we had our first ever tour of Potomac Senior High, put together by, and led personally by the very nice Ms. Anna Crowe, who is a member of the staff at the school. As a special treat, one of the football coaches at Potomac, Coach Albert Parks, gave everyone a Potomac football t-shirt. And a classmate of mine, Debra Padgett (Stoddert, Potomac ‘76) were given, “throwback”, jerseys--old, real football jerseys of the school when they were still the, “Braves” (and the mascot proudly emblazoned on the sleeve). Thanks, Coach! It was a very memorable walk down those hallowed halls once again, and you know what? Much of it looks as it did from the early 70’s. Some of the group also purchased old Potomac yearbooks, which the school sells if they have extra copies. Personally, I know have copies of the Potomac yearbooks from the years 1968-1976 (excluding 1972). Again, I speak for everyone when I say again, THANKS, ANNA!

Following the school tour, I stopped by 28th Parkway in Hillcrest Heights, and spoke to Mr. Joe Nappi. Mr. Nappi and family moved into the first house on 28th Parkway back in 1958. Back in 1967 I lived at 5007 28th Parkway, two houses down from the Nappi’s. It was Mr. Nappi who called an ambulance for me, when I was involved in a bad bicycle accident, coming down a hill to 28th Parkway. But more than that, Mr. Nappi is a wonderful resource for local history on Hillcrest Heights, Marlow Heights, etc. There are others like Mr. Nappi that still live in the same houses they bought back in the 50’s or 60’s. If you know of parents of your old friends and classmates who still live in the old neighborhoods, I encourage you to seek them out and talk to them. You will learn a lot.

Naturally, the day’s activities ended with our regular Steak in a Sack get together. A few of us (Billie Martin, Paul Blume, Mick Wolverton, Pam Johnston, and yours truly), went over to Macy’s (still Hecht’s to me) and reminisced within the store, which still looks pretty much the same. We also spoke with a couple of friendly sales associates who have been in the store since the 70’s, and they filled us in on some changes since then. Other than that, most of us were engaging in the, “Do you remember...?”, stuff, like where the candy counter was, the Maryland Room restaurant, where everyone bought their concert tickets, etc. People attending were: (still under construction)
